Ghadames
  • Ghadames is the pearl of the desert, has been said about it "one trip to Ghadames equal all your own life".
  • it is also the gate of the Sahara.
  • Ghadames is situated on the north-west edge of the AL-Hamada AL-Hamra plateau .
  • it is one of the oldest Libyan cities, which is characterized by the continuity of life to the present time.
  • Ghadames remains as an example to the subsequent civilizations which passed through the city from the prehistoric times till now.
  • the first thing that attracts the visitors attention in Ghadames is the type of and building system .men there, invented the means of construction to go with the Sahara environment, for example the arches and their bases which l ighten the weight of the roofs on walls. Ghadames is famous for two types of arches:
    • 1- pointed arches, chizawa castle is the example of this types.
    • 2- horseshoe arches. Bigger than half a circle in shape, this type of arch may be noted in the arches of underground gates in Ghadames.
  • . the second attractive thing is the folklore and traditional clothes for tawarig tribes who a wear the veil which covers their faces day and night .
  • . due to its palm-trees Ghadames is a shady oasis in the glare of the Sahara sun . it is famous for its sweet water , marvelous architecture, original folklore.
Ghadames stands still as one of the most valuable spots in Libya for the traveller. Here you'll find a tranquil old city, with covered streets that are both dark and with far lower temperatures than what you find outdoors. And of course, the colour chosen, is white. Ghadames represents popular engineering, and is the result of a complex knowledge on how to deal with extreme temperatures. The positioning of the houses are far from casual. Every angle, every wall, every opening in the roofs over the alleyways, are parts of the same organism.
Even if Ghadames still stands, the people have moved out of it, into the modern settlement nearby. They still take refuge in the old city when summer becomes unbearable. But with the locals out, and their dwindling knowledge on structuring of houses with natural air conditioning, an important science could be lost.
In earlier days, the life line of Ghadames was trade through the Sahara, including slavery. Today the 10,000 people here make a living out of agriculture. Tourism could and should revive, and become even greater than it was in the colonial period.
